Family Court Moves To Imaged Files

Electronic Documents Become Official Record on October 17th

More than a year after implementing a new Family Law case management system, the Superior Court is set to designate imaged Family Court documents as the official Court record. All newly initiated cases filed on or after August 24, 2015 have been imaged, created into an electronic file, and will be the official Court record effective October 17, 2016. Those cases filed prior to August 24, 2015 will remain on paper at this time and titled as “legacy cases”.

With the new case management system, access to Family Court files will become easier. For example, Family Law cases will be accessible for public viewing via kiosks located at all Family Law Court locations. (Confidential cases and documents will not be available at the kiosks. The public must speak with the clerk concerning access to those files.) The public will beable to print copies of imaged Family Court documents, and retrieve them at the business office counter, after paying the clerk $.50/page.

“We continually strive to provide better access to our services for those involved in our Family Court cases. The imaging of case files is a critical part of our efforts. The availability of Family Court files electronically allows parties and their attorneys to view and obtain copies of documents in imaged cases without waiting in long lines in the business offices and reviewing cumbersome paper files to find the documents or court dates they need. We are grateful for the new imaging system and believe that it will help all parties navigate the system and obtain information more quickly and easily,” says Judge Maureen Hallahan, Supervising Judge of the Family Court.

One can determine if a Family Law case has been imaged, and turned into an electronic file, by conducting a case search on any computer. The word [IMAGED] will appear in the case title of the search results. To view the imaged file, one must use kiosks located at San Diego Family Court facilities.

The Court began implementation of the Tyler Technologies’ case management system in August 24, 2015 as it moved from an obsolete DOS-based operating system that was difficult to maintain and could not to be effectively updated.

This transition to a new computer program marks the first significant improvement in the San Diego Superior Court Family Law case management system in more than twenty years.
